In 2019, prompted by an article in the Irish Times in April, https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/homes-and-property/ireland-s-great-houses-the-homes-to-visit-in-2019-1.3857422,
in which the author writes:
“May traditionally kicks off the house-visiting season with many of Ireland’s great houses opening their doors from May 1st. More than 170 houses, gardens and buildings of interest welcome visitors for 60 days a year under the section 482 scheme that allows owners off set renovation and maintenance costs against income tax.”
I decided to try to visit as many Open Houses as possible in Ireland in 2019, and to blog about it. I continued in 2020. When Covid-19 restrictions permit, I will continue this year. I will try to set myself the ambitious goal of blogging about one place every two weeks.
According to Revenue website:
“Section 482 of the Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997, as amended, provides tax relief to the owner/occupier of an approved building (including surrounding garden), or an approved garden existing independently, in respect of expenditure incurred on its repair, maintenance or restoration.”
