In 1851 Pierce S. Smith [Smyth), a minor, held Monatray in fee when it was valued at £35. In 2013 it was offered for sale. The sale details suggest it was built by Percy Smyth of Headborough as a summer residence in the 1830s. In the twentieth century it was occupied by a religious order and later a country house club before returning to private ownership in the 1980s. In recent years the house name is spelt Monatrae. In 2014 Monatrae was offered for sale.

Detached three-bay two-storey house, c.1820, possibly over basement with four-bay two-storey side elevations, single-bay single-storey recessed bay to left (east), and four-bay two-storey parallel wing with dormer attic to left (east). Renovated, c.1870, with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed advanced open porch added to centre. In use as hotel, 1926. Refenestrated, c.1995. Now returned to residential use. Hipped slate roofs (on a quadrangular plan to main block) with rolled lead ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, replacement square rooflights, c.1995, to parallel wing, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Flat roof to porch not visible behind blocking course. Painted roughcast walls with rendered quoins to corners, and painted rendered stringcourse to first floor. Square-headed window openings with stone sills (forming sill course to first floor), rendered surrounds, and replacement uPVC casement windows, c.1995. Segmental-headed door opening under flat-roofed advanced porch having panelled piers on plinth with timber screens, moulded cornice over, timber panelled door, decorative sidelights, and fanlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set back from road in own grounds with landscaped grounds to site.

Appraisal

A well-appointed, substantial house that retains most of its original form, and some of its original character. However, the inappropriate replacement fittings to the window openings have not had a positive impact on the external expression of the composition. The house is of particular importance for its historic associations with Reverend Percy Smyth of Headborough House (builder), the Perceval-Smyth family (subsequent owners), and for the subsequent use as an hotel, representing an aspect of the commercialisation of the locality as Ardmore was developed as a holiday/seaside resort in the late nineteenth/early twentieth centuries. The house remains an important feature in the landscape, visible from across Youghal Harbour to the west.
