A George IV house built in the fashionable Tudor-gothic revival ‘cottage’ style and set in the most delightful mature grounds.
Rathwade is an extremely attractive and beautifully proportioned house in the Tudor style. The design is attributed to the renowned nineteenth century architect Daniel Robertson, although the style is similar in design and possibly influenced by examples designed by the revered architect R.V. Morrison. Constructed between 1820 and 1840 for a member of the Bagenal family, of nearby Dunleckney Manor, the pleasing characteristics of the exterior continue inside with gracious reception rooms and nicely proportioned bedrooms.
Detached three-bay two-storey Tudor Revival house, c. 1835, on an asymmetrical plan with bay windows, tower, gables, turret chimney stacks and service wing to rear. Designed by Daniel Robertson.

Record of Protected Structures:
Rathwade House,
Leighlinbridge . Townland: Rathwade.
A tudor-gothic revival ‘cottage’ of circa 1835 with an asymmetrical-plan though the façade itself is symmetrical having three bays and two storeys with an advanced bay which has a high-pitched gable. Above the segmental-headed doorcase, with its drip label, is a corbelled, projecting gable with a single window. The walls are cement rendered, the ground-floor windows are mullioned and the first-floor windows are set in small gables. The garden front has gabled bays, a two-storey, granite bay window and another single-storey bay window. The roof plan is complex and the roof is covered with natural slates and has granite stacks. The house is in the form of a tudor cottage similar to those designed by R.V.Morrison especially at Lough Bray in County Wicklow though this house is clearly by Daniel Robertson.

On seeing this image a few of us here at House and Home developed some serious house envy. Welcome to Rathwade House. Located in Nurney, County Carlow. This incredible seven bedroom Tudor-Gothic style manor house stretches to over 9,000 square feet (gulp!) and sits on about 13 acres of beautiful mature gardens featuring a stunning collection of trees and shrubs providing complete privacy from all angles of the house.
The long entrance hall is very grand but it still looks welcoming and cosy with all the warm rugs on the floor and family pictures on the wall. We love the country style kitchen with its large cream Aga and green-painted timber cladding. You can practically smell the brown bread baking in the Aga when you look at this room. Love the idea of having french doors off the kitchen leading to the garden…
The library has a fabulous window seat set into the tall bay windows at the end of the room which would be perfect for a family game of cards on Christmas evening or just a morning coffee looking out onto that dreamy garden….
What a welcoming entrance… Well if you have €850,000 lying around this beautiful home could be yours! Additional information on this house can be found at http://www.myhome.ie/residential/brochure/rathwade-house-nurney-co-carlow/1611583
